House Republicans derailed a procedural vote to advance three cryptocurrency bills on July 15, dealing a blow to pro-crypto factions within the party. The 196-223 vote saw opposition from both Democrats and GOP hardliners, who demanded the legislation be bundled with two additional bills—one addressing market structure and another proposing a ban on central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) criticized the Senate for omitting a CBDC prohibition from the GENIUS Act, echoing former President Trump’s January executive order. House Speaker Mike Johnson’s refusal to allow amendments further complicated negotiations. Leadership plans a second vote, though its scope remains uncertain.
